South Tyneside Council manages six allotment sites in South Shields, ranging from the large 228-plot Holder House to the smaller Harton Lane with 11 plots. Waiting lists exist, but plots do come up -- and the range of site sizes means there are options across the town. Here is the guide.

How to Apply

Contact South Tyneside Council to apply. You must be 18 years or older and cannot already hold a plot (unless the waiting list for a site is empty). The council also publishes a map of allotment sites.

Contact the outdoor facilities team at 0191 424 7979 or outdoor.facilities@southtyneside.gov.uk for availability and rental prices.

Waiting times: Vary by site. Holder House and Northfield are the most popular and likely to have the longest waits.

What People Grow

South Shields' coastal position means salt-laden wind can be a factor on exposed plots, but most sites are sheltered enough for standard allotment crops: potatoes, onions, leeks, brassicas, runner beans, beetroot, carrots, and soft fruit. Polytunnels and windbreaks are common. The town's long tradition of growing -- Holder House has been an allotment site for generations -- means experienced neighbours are never far away.

Community Growing

Shields Road Allotments also operate in the area with their own applications and waiting list process.
