South Tyneside College's Town-Centre Move Heads for 2027 Opening
The relocation of South Tyneside College and the Marine School to a new King Street campus is progressing, with student accommodation approved and a September 2027 intake in sight.
Plans to bring South Tyneside College and the world-renowned South Shields Marine School into the heart of the town centre are moving ahead, with the project now firmly aimed at welcoming its first students in September 2027.
The college's home for decades has been the Westoe site, away from the shops and the transport hub. The new campus will sit right in the town centre, close to South Shields Interchange, putting thousands of students and staff a short walk from King Street, the Metro and the bus station every day. For a town centre working hard to recover its footfall, that daily flow of people is a significant part of the appeal.
What is planned
The main college building will be entered from King Street through a double-height glass atrium, with a second entrance on Barrington Street and a refurbished Grade II listed building brought back into use as part of the scheme. The move is backed by a mix of funding, including £20m of government regeneration money for the town centre and riverside, £21.9m from the Department for Education's college capital fund and up to £18.2m from the North East Combined Authority.
Somewhere for students to live
A key piece of the plan is student accommodation down on the riverside. The former BT Business Centre at One Harton Quay, a four-storey glass office block, has been approved for conversion into a 125-bed student facility, with en-suite rooms arranged in clusters around shared kitchens and lounges. Work on both the campus and the accommodation is expected to get under way, keeping the September 2027 target on track.

Bringing a college and its students into the centre of South Shields is one of the more visible parts of the wider regeneration, alongside the Customs House refurbishment and the Holborn riverside homes. Timelines on projects this size can slip, but the direction is set.
