Six South Tyneside Parks Retain Prestigious Green Flag Status

North Marine, South Marine, Readhead and West Park are among six South Tyneside green spaces recognised as among the best-managed in the country, backed by dedicated Friends groups and volunteers.

Six parks across South Tyneside have kept the Green Flag Award, the national quality mark for the best-managed green spaces — good news for the many South Shields residents who use these parks for walks, play and time outdoors.

Four South Shields parks make the list

The four South Shields winners are North Marine Park, South Marine Park, Readhead Park and West Park. They are joined by Jarrow's West Park and Monkton Dene Park, taking the borough's total to six.

The Green Flag Award is managed by the charity Keep Britain Tidy and is regarded as the benchmark for well-run parks. The scheme is now in its 30th year, and retaining the flag means the parks have again met a high standard for things like cleanliness, safety, upkeep and community involvement.

Volunteers at the heart of it

The council was quick to credit the local Friends groups and volunteers who give their time throughout the year to litter picking, planting, fundraising and running community activities.

Best for: "Retaining Green Flag status for all six parks is a fantastic achievement and reflects the hard work and dedication of everyone involved in caring for these valued community spaces." — Gary Kirsop, South Tyneside Council

Paul Todd MBE, Green Flag Award Manager at Keep Britain Tidy, said South Tyneside showed "what can be achieved when parks are properly supported and managed" — a timely message with public budgets under pressure.

The awards were reported by the Shields Gazette.
