What's On This Weekend in South Shields & the North East (20-22 June)
Tunes in June with Rivelino at Arbeia, a creative writing group at The Word, plus The Hoppings, Blyth Live, Tynemouth Market, and Father's Day treats across the region.
A live music evening at a Roman fort, a creative writing group at The Word, and Father's Day on Sunday -- South Shields has a fine weekend ahead. Further afield, The Hoppings returns to Town Moor, Blyth Live takes over the quayside, and there is theatre, film, and music across Newcastle and Tynemouth. Here is what is on from Saturday to Monday.
Tunes in June: Rivelino at Arbeia
Saturday 20 June at Arbeia Roman Fort. FREE. The Tunes in June series continues with Rivelino performing live at Arbeia. Free music against the backdrop of a reconstructed Roman gateway -- one of South Shields' best summer evenings and a perfect start to the weekend.
South Shields Creative Writing Group -- The Word
Sunday 21 June at The Word, South Shields. A friendly creative writing group meeting at The Word on the waterfront. Whether you are working on a novel, poetry, or just enjoy putting pen to paper, this is a welcoming session for writers of all levels. A thoughtful way to spend part of Father's Day.
The Hoppings 2026
All weekend on Town Moor, Newcastle. Europe's largest travelling funfair returns to Town Moor for its annual run. Rides, stalls, and food vendors stretch across the Moor in a North East tradition dating back to the 1880s. Well worth the Metro journey, especially with children.
Blyth Live 2026
Saturday 20 June at Blyth Quayside. A full day of live music on the Blyth waterfront. Multiple stages, street food, and a festival atmosphere in a harbourside setting. One of the bigger free events in Northumberland this summer.
Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart Experience -- The Cluny
Saturday 20 June at The Cluny, Newcastle. A tribute to two of British rock's finest, performed at one of Newcastle's best live music venues. The Cluny's intimate setting makes for a proper night out.
The Godfather + Afternoon Tea -- Tyneside Cinema
Sunday 21 June at Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle. A Father's Day screening of The Godfather paired with afternoon tea at the Tyneside Cinema. Coppola's masterpiece on the big screen with sandwiches and cake -- a gift idea that does not involve socks.
Tynemouth Station Market
Saturday and Sunday at Tynemouth Station. FREE entry. The region's favourite weekend market returns under the Victorian canopy, with handmade crafts, vintage finds, street food, and live music. Just across the river from South Shields via the Metro.
Operation Mincemeat -- Theatre Royal
Monday 22 June at Theatre Royal, Newcastle. The award-winning West End musical based on the extraordinary true story of a Second World War deception plot. Sharp, funny, and brilliantly staged -- a strong choice for a Monday evening at the Theatre Royal.
