Free live music at Arbeia kicks off the weekend, South Shields' own Joe McElderry takes the stage at Theatre Royal, and there is a cracking food festival on the coast at Whitley Bay. Here is what is on from Friday to Sunday.

Tunes in June: Amateur Ornithologist at Arbeia

Friday 27 June at Arbeia Roman Fort. FREE. The Tunes in June series continues with Amateur Ornithologist performing live at Arbeia from 2pm. Free music against the backdrop of a reconstructed Roman gateway -- one of the best ways to spend a Friday afternoon in South Shields.

Something in the Water (Joe McElderry)

Saturday 28 June at Theatre Royal, Newcastle. South Shields' own Joe McElderry stars in this new musical at the Theatre Royal, with performances at 2:30pm and 7:30pm. A proud moment for the town -- well worth the Metro journey to see a local lad on one of the biggest stages in the North East.

Northumberland Plate Festival

Saturday 27 June at Newcastle Racecourse. The Pitmen's Derby is the highlight of the flat racing summer in the North East. A full day of racing at Gosforth Park with the big race drawing huge crowds. Easy to reach by Metro and bus from South Shields.

Feast by the Sea

Saturday and Sunday 28-29 June at Spanish City, Whitley Bay. A weekend food festival at the iconic Spanish City dome. Street food, local producers, cookery demonstrations, and live music right on the seafront. Whitley Bay is an easy trip up the coast from South Shields.

Buzz Dance: At The Movies

Friday 27 June at Northern Stage, Newcastle. A high-energy dance show inspired by the silver screen, performed at Northern Stage from 7:30pm. Contemporary dance with a cinematic twist -- a strong Friday night option if you fancy something different.

Tynemouth Station Market

Saturday 27 June at Tynemouth Station. The region's favourite weekend market under the Victorian canopy, with handmade crafts, vintage finds, street food, and live music. Just across the river from South Shields via the Metro. Open from 9am to 4pm.
