The Best Independent Shops in South Shields

South Shields has some real independent gems — a butcher trading since 1865, family bakeries, a long-established jeweller, a craft shop and a vintage store. Here is where to shop local.

South Shields is best known for its beaches and its food, but the town has a scattering of genuinely special independent shops — several of them family businesses going back generations. Here is our pick of where to shop local, and our Independent Shops in South Shields hub brings them all together, each linking straight through to the business.

Food, deli and bakeries

Pride of place goes to H. Sharp Butchers on Frederick Street, a family butcher trading since 1865 and now four generations on. Faulkner's Deli has been an independent delicatessen since 1976, and the town has two excellent family bakeries in Lee's Family Bakers, established 1971, and Akins Family Bakers, an artisan bakery baking sourdough fresh daily.

Jewellers, gifts and crafts

Smithson Jewellers on Fowler Street has been a family jeweller since 1954, offering jewellery, watches and repairs. Keltic Touch in Westoe is an independent gift shop, and Crafty Corner is a craft shop and studio selling supplies and running classes.

Cycles and vintage

For bikes, AS Cycles has been a family-run cycle shop and repair centre since 1977, and for a good rummage, ninetytwo on Boldon Lane is an independent second-hand and vintage shop full of records, retro art, antiques and collectables.

Shop local

Our Independent Shops in South Shields hub lists butchers, bakeries, a deli, jewellers, gift and craft shops, a cycle shop, vintage and florists — each a real local business with a link straight through.
