South Shields sits on one of the most dramatic stretches of coastline in the North East. The sea is never far away, and the walks here range from gentle park circuits to clifftop paths with views that rival anywhere in the country. Here are four of the best walks from South Shields.

1. The Leas to Marsden Bay

Distance: 3 miles (4.8km) one way | Time: 1.5-2 hours | Terrain: Grass and coastal paths, mostly flat with gentle undulations

This is the signature walk of South Shields and one of the finest coastal walks in the North East. Start at the southern end of Bents Park on Sea Road and head south along the clifftop path. You are now walking along The Leas, a two-mile strip of grassland managed by the National Trust and designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

The cliffs here are magnesian limestone, carved by the North Sea into stacks, arches, and sheltered bays. In spring and summer, the grassland is alive with wildflowers and the cliffs host thousands of nesting kittiwakes, fulmars, and cormorants. You will pass Frenchman's Bay, a small sheltered cove, before reaching Marsden Rock -- a dramatic sea stack that is one of the most photographed landmarks on the coast.

Drop down to Marsden Bay to visit the Marsden Grotto, a pub built into the cave at the base of the cliffs, with a history stretching back to the eighteenth century. From here you can continue south to Souter Lighthouse at Whitburn, or retrace your steps along the clifftop.

Best for: The definitive South Shields walk. Spectacular clifftop scenery, nesting seabirds, and a pub in a cave at the halfway point.

2. Littlehaven to Tynemouth via the Coast

Distance: 2 miles (3.2km) one way | Time: 45 minutes-1 hour | Terrain: Paved paths and promenade, flat throughout

Start at Littlehaven Beach on the north side of South Shields, where the landscaped dunes and public sculptures make for a pleasant starting point. Head north along the coastal path, following the shoreline towards the mouth of the River Tyne. The views across the harbour are superb, with fishing boats, the pilot jetty, and the North and South Piers framing the river entrance.

Continue along the path as it rounds the headland. You can cross the river mouth by foot via the Shields Ferry from Market Dock to North Shields, or follow the coastal path northwards to reach Tynemouth Priory and Castle, perched dramatically on the headland above King Edward's Bay.

The entire route is paved and flat, suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. It is an easy walk with constantly changing views of the river, the coast, and the harbour activity.

Best for: A gentle, paved walk with harbour views and the option of a ferry crossing to North Shields.

3. South Marine Park and the Seafront Loop

Distance: 2 miles (3.2km) | Time: 45 minutes-1 hour | Terrain: Paved paths and promenade, flat

This is the ideal walk for families and anyone wanting a shorter outing. Start at South Marine Park and follow the paths around the boating lake, passing the miniature railway and the play areas. Exit the park on the seaward side and join the seafront promenade heading south past Sandhaven Beach.

Walk along the prom as far as Bents Park, then cut back through the park to return to your starting point. Along the way you will pass The Sand Dancer pub and Colmans Seafood Temple if you need refreshments, and there are benches and shelters along the seafront for a rest.

The whole loop is paved and flat, and can easily be extended by continuing south along the coast towards The Leas if you want a longer walk.

Best for: A family-friendly loop taking in the park, the boating lake, and the seafront. Flat and paved throughout.

4. Sandhaven to Souter Lighthouse

Distance: 4 miles (6.4km) one way | Time: 2-2.5 hours | Terrain: Mixed -- promenade, grass paths, and coastal tracks

For a longer walk, combine the seafront and the clifftop into a single route. Start at Sandhaven Beach and head south along the promenade. At Bents Park, leave the paved path and join the grass clifftop trail along The Leas. Continue past Marsden Rock, Marsden Bay, and Marsden Grotto, then follow the path south to Souter Lighthouse at Whitburn.

This walk gives you the full range of South Shields' coastal scenery: the wide sandy beach, the parks, the dramatic limestone cliffs, the seabird colonies, and the lighthouse at the far end. The return journey can be made by retracing your steps, or by catching the E1 bus from Whitburn back to South Shields town centre.

Best for: The full South Shields coastal experience in one walk. Take the bus back from Whitburn to save your legs.

Practical Tips

  • The Leas paths are grass and can be muddy after rain. Wear sturdy footwear in winter and spring.
  • Marsden Grotto is accessible by a lift from the clifftop or by steps down to the beach. Check opening hours before setting out.
  • The Shields Ferry runs every 30 minutes between South Shields Market Dock and North Shields. It takes about seven minutes and accepts Metro tickets and contactless payment.
  • Dogs are welcome on The Leas year-round. Some beach areas have seasonal restrictions from May to September -- check signs locally.
  • Parking for the seafront walks is available at the South Promenade or Dragon car parks on Sea Road. For Souter Lighthouse, the National Trust car park is on the A183 coast road.
