Dog-Friendly South Shields: The Complete Guide

Beaches, parks, pubs, and cafes — everything you need to know about exploring South Shields with your dog.

SouthShields.org·

South Shields is one of the most dog-friendly towns in the North East. Miles of coastline, large parks, and a growing number of pubs and cafes that genuinely welcome dogs make it an excellent place to live or visit with a four-legged companion. Here is your complete guide.

Beaches

South Shields has several beaches, but they are not all equal when it comes to dogs.

Sandhaven Beach — Seasonal Restrictions

Sandhaven is the main beach, stretching from the pier to Trow Point. Dogs are banned from 1 May to 30 September, between 8am and 6pm. The restriction zone runs from the pier southwards to Trow Point. Outside these hours and dates, dogs are welcome. A fixed penalty of £100 applies for breaking this order (reduced to £50 if paid within seven days).

In practice, this means early morning and late evening walks on Sandhaven are fine during summer, but midday visits between May and September are out.

Littlehaven Beach — Dog-Friendly Year-Round

Littlehaven, just north of the pier, is the beach to head for if you want to avoid restrictions entirely. Dogs are welcome here all year round, making it the go-to for summer beach walks. It is a smaller, quieter beach than Sandhaven, backed by a promenade with easy access.

Marsden Beach — Dog-Friendly Year-Round

Further south, Marsden Beach and the dramatic sea stacks at Marsden Rock are also dog-friendly throughout the year. The coastal path from South Shields to Marsden is one of the best dog walks in the area — dramatic cliffs, wide open views, and relatively quiet even in summer.

Best for: Littlehaven and Marsden beaches are dog-friendly year-round. Sandhaven bans dogs from May to September between 8am and 6pm.

Parks and Green Spaces

South Marine Park

South Marine Park on the seafront has been a gathering place for over a century. It features a boating lake (with a resident population of swans, ducks, and geese), a bandstand, playground, and ornamental gardens. Dogs are welcome in the park but should be kept on a lead around the play areas and lake — there are lots of children and wildlife about.

The park has a cafe with outdoor seating where dogs are welcome, making it a good stop on a longer walk.

Bents Park

Bents Park sits right on the coast between the seafront and Marsden, and is a large open green space popular with dog walkers. It hosts outdoor concerts in summer (the South Tyneside Festival stages are set up here), but for most of the year it is simply a wide, flat expanse of grass with sea views — perfect for throwing a ball.

The Leas

The Leas is the coastal grassland running south from Bents Park towards Marsden and Whitburn. It is one of the best dog walks in South Tyneside — open, breezy, and with uninterrupted views along the Durham coastline. The path is well maintained and connects through to Whitburn Coastal Park, a nature reserve managed by the National Trust.

Dogs should be kept under control on The Leas, particularly near the cliff edges and during bird nesting season (spring and early summer).

Best for: The Leas coastal walk from Bents Park to Marsden is one of the best dog walks in the North East — open grassland with dramatic cliff-top views.

Dog-Friendly Pubs

The Sand Dancer

The Sand Dancer at 2 Sea Road is right on Sandhaven Beach and is genuinely dog-friendly — not just tolerant, but welcoming. The pub has a dedicated dog treats menu and water bowls available. The beer garden overlooks the sea, making it an ideal post-walk stop.

The Bamburgh

The Bamburgh at 175 Bamburgh Avenue is a Greene King pub near the coast that welcomes dogs in designated areas. Water bowls and treats are available on request. Its location near The Leas makes it a natural stop after a cliff-top walk.

The New Crown Hotel

The New Crown Hotel on Mile End Road is operated by Marston's and has a "wall of fame" showcasing photographs of dogs who have visited. Dogs are welcome inside the pub, and the kitchen serves full pub meals.

Best for: The Sand Dancer has a dedicated dog treats menu — one of the most genuinely dog-friendly pubs in the North East.

Dog-Friendly Cafes

Several South Shields cafes welcome dogs, particularly those with outdoor seating. The cafe in South Marine Park has outdoor tables where dogs are welcome, and Minchella and Co on the seafront walkway is a popular post-walk stop.

Rules to Remember

South Tyneside Council requires that dogs are kept under control in all public spaces. An authorised officer can require you to put your dog on a lead if it is causing alarm or distress. Dog fouling carries a fixed penalty — always carry bags.

The key restriction to remember is Sandhaven Beach: no dogs between 8am and 6pm from 1 May to 30 September. Outside those times and locations, South Shields is about as dog-friendly as a town gets.
