Namaste Marks Ten Years on King George Road with Refurbishment and New Menu
The popular Indian restaurant on King George Road is closing for a few days this August for a refurbishment and a new, cheaper menu, after signing a fresh 15-year lease to stay put.
Namaste, the Indian restaurant on King George Road, is marking its tenth anniversary this month with a refresh that signals it plans to be part of South Shields for a long time to come. The team has signed a new deal to stay in the same building for another 15 years, and is using the milestone to redecorate and relaunch its menu.
A short closure, then a new look
The restaurant will close for a few days in mid to late August — around three or four days, with no firm dates set yet — to carry out the refurbishment. When it reopens, diners can expect a completely new menu that the team says will be cheaper than before, even if slightly smaller than the current one.
For a family business, that pricing decision is a deliberate one. Rofman Ahmed, one of the team behind the brand, told the Shields Gazette the restaurant is settling in for the long haul.
Best for: "We've just signed a new contract, we're going to be there for another 15 years. We're a family business and we are here for the long term." — Rofman Ahmed
Committed to the town
The team has framed the cheaper menu as a way of supporting customers through a tough time for household budgets, and stresses that hospitality in South Shields is about more than just serving food — it is about being part of the community.
To mark the relaunch, the restaurant plans an opening night with around 300 invited customers, live music and complimentary food to give guests a taste of the new dishes. Namaste is one of four sites the family runs across the region, alongside restaurants in Gateshead's Sunniside, Seaham and Seaburn in Sunderland.
