SouthShields.org·

South Shields and South Tyneside have some of the best skateboarding facilities in the North East. Whether you are a beginner looking for a safe place to learn or an experienced rider after a proper bowl session, there is a park here for you. This guide covers the main options in and around the town.

South Shields Skate Park (Sandhaven)

South Shields Skate Park is the main outdoor park and one of the most popular in the region. Located right next to Sandhaven Beach on the promenade, it combines a prime seafront location with a well-designed concrete layout.

What to Expect

The park features a mixture of flowing ramps, built-in contours, transitions, and bowls designed for skateboards, scooters, and BMX bikes. The concrete surface is smooth and well maintained, and the layout allows riders of different abilities to use the park at the same time without getting in each other's way.

Adjacent to the skate park there is a multi-use games area with a basketball court and a football pitch, plus seating along the edge for anyone watching.

Facilities

  • Free to use, open all day
  • Public toilets on the promenade nearby
  • Cafes and food outlets within walking distance on the seafront
  • Pay-and-display parking in the Sea Road car parks

Best For

All levels. The flowing transitions suit beginners and intermediate riders, while the bowls and deeper sections challenge more experienced skaters. It gets busy on warm weekends and school holidays -- for a quieter session, visit on a weekday morning.

Address: Promenade, South Shields, NE33 2JH

Best for: The Sandhaven skate park is free, right next to the beach, and open all day. It is one of the best-located outdoor skateparks in the North East.

What to Expect

Override is an indoor park with ramps, rails, and features for skateboards, scooters, and BMX bikes. The park caters for all ages and abilities, from complete beginners to experienced riders. Staff are on hand to help newcomers learn the basics in a safe and supportive environment.

Temple Park Area

Temple Park Centre on John Reid Road is South Tyneside Council's flagship leisure centre. The surrounding area includes outdoor sports facilities and a skate-friendly zone that is popular with local riders. While not a dedicated skatepark with purpose-built ramps, the smooth tarmac areas and open space make it a regular gathering spot for skaters.

The centre itself offers a large fitness suite, swimming, badminton, squash, and fitness classes if you want to combine a skate session with other activities.

Address: John Reid Road, South Shields, NE34 8QN
