A South Shields pub with a big reputation for good causes is once again rallying round one of the town's most quietly heroic institutions. The Steamboat, the historic riverside pub at the Mill Dam, is fundraising for the South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade.

A pub with form for good causes

The Steamboat is one of the town's most popular and historic pubs — a Grade II-listed building at the Mill Dam that has picked up CAMRA awards on numerous occasions. It has also built a long track record of charity fundraising, from raffles and live music nights to dedicated charity events, and this latest drive continues that habit of putting something back into the local community.

Who the money helps

The South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade is a genuine local institution. Founded in 1866, it is run entirely by volunteers and provides a search-and-rescue service on and around the mouth of the Tyne, working alongside HM Coastguard. Because it is a volunteer body, it depends on donations and community fundraising to keep its equipment and its watch-house going.
