South Shields is marking World Mental Health Day with a community art show this weekend. On Saturday 10 October, local businesses and community groups are coming together at Ignition at The Venue on Stanhope Street to put creativity and conversation about wellbeing in the spotlight.

The show runs from 10am to 2pm and is organised by Luna Blu NE, a South Shields community interest company that uses creative arts therapy to support mental health, in partnership with the Red Bench Project.

What to expect

On the walls will be artwork from organisations Luna Blu NE has worked with, alongside pieces submitted by South Tyneside residents. It is a chance to see what people across the borough have been making, and a reminder that picking up a paintbrush or a pencil can be a good way to look after your head.

A handful of local traders will also be there, including Derries Delights, Jimmy's Whistles, Bound To You Permanent Jewelry, Katie's Flower Hut and The Rock Shop.

Support on the day

Several community organisations will have a presence at the show, including Andy's Man Club, Bede's Helping Hands, STARS, Northern Rights and South Tyneside Young Carers. If you have been meaning to find out what is available locally, for yourself or someone close to you, it is an easy, low-pressure way to have a chat.

About the organisers

Luna Blu NE runs creative workshops for young people, adults, families and older people, including sessions for people living with dementia. You can find out more on the Luna Blu NE website.

The Red Bench Project is a suicide prevention charity that places bright red benches in spots around South Tyneside. The idea is simple: a red bench is a place to sit when things feel heavy, and a signal to passers-by that it is fine to stop and say hello.

Best for: If you are struggling, you do not have to wait for an event to reach out. Samaritans are free to call any time, day or night, on 116 123. For urgent mental health help, call NHS 111 and choose the mental health option, and in an emergency always call 999.

The event was reported by the Shields Gazette.
