About This Event

Arbeia, South Shields' Roman Fort on Baring Street, opens after dark on Saturday 12 December 2026 for atmospheric candlelit tours. Two sittings are offered, from 4:30pm to 5:30pm and from 6pm to 7pm, letting visitors experience the site in a very different light from a daytime visit. Led by expert guide Sue Balmer, the tour includes time to explore the reconstructed Commanding Officer's House and learn about life at the fort that once guarded the mouth of the Tyne. The evening finishes with light refreshments including hot drinks and mince pies. The event is part of North East Museums' Christmas programme. Tickets are £10 per person, with an optional £2 donation towards preserving the region's art and heritage. Places are limited and early booking is recommended; the tours are not suitable for under-12s, and visitors are advised to dress warmly for all weathers and wear sensible shoes.
