A Very Victorian Christmas comes to The Word, the National Centre for the Written Word in South Shields, on Saturday 12 December 2026 from 1pm to 3pm. Presented by History Wardrobe, the event is a lively costumed talk exploring how the Victorians shaped the Christmas we know today, from cards and crackers to trees, decorations and festive fashion. Using genuine and reproduction garments and accessories, the presenters bring the social history of the season to life, weaving together storytelling, costume and seasonal detail for an entertaining and informative afternoon. Tickets are £9.38 including the booking fee, and booking is required. The Word is a striking modern building in South Shields' Market Place, a short walk from the Metro and the riverside.
