About This Event

Meet Victor the Veteran, a costumed Roman re-enactor, and discover what soldiers at this frontier supply base really ate. Children learn about Roman food — from pottage (a vegetable and meat stew) and moretum (a herby cheese spread) to the fish sauce that flavoured almost everything. Hands-on activities bring ancient recipes to life in a way that's fun and accessible for young visitors. Arbeia Roman Fort is free to enter (donations welcome) and sits at the eastern end of Hadrian's Wall, overlooking the mouth of the River Tyne. A great free day out for families during the school holidays.
