SouthShields.org·

For a town of around 75,000 people, South Shields has produced a remarkable number of famous names across literature, film, comedy, music, dance, and theatre. Here are the most notable people from South Shields and the places in town connected to them.

Dame Catherine Cookson (1906-1998)

Catherine Cookson was born on 20 June 1906 at 5 Leam Lane in Tyne Dock and grew up in poverty in the streets around the docks. She went on to become the most borrowed author in British public libraries for seventeen consecutive years and one of the best-selling novelists in history, with over 100 novels and more than 123 million copies sold.

Her books — including Kate Hannigan, The Fifteen Streets, Colour Blind, and The Gambling Man — are set in and around South Shields and capture working-class life in the town with unflinching honesty. South Shields Museum on Ocean Road has a permanent Catherine Cookson display, and you can follow the Catherine Cookson Trail around Tyne Dock to see the streets that shaped her writing.

Jade Thirlwall was born on 26 December 1992 in South Shields and attended St Wilfrid's RC College. She became a member of Little Mix after the group won The X Factor in 2011 — the first group ever to win the show. Little Mix went on to sell over 50 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling girl groups of all time.
