SouthShields.org·

South Shields is one of those rare places where some of the best things to do are completely free. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, a world-class library, golden beaches, coastal walks, free summer concerts, and a museum that charges nothing for entry — it is a remarkably good deal for a day out. Here is your guide to the best free things to do in South Shields.

Arbeia Roman Fort

Arbeia Roman Fort on Baring Street is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that once guarded the main sea route to Hadrian's Wall. Today it features full-scale Roman reconstructions — including a commanding officer's house, a barracks block, and a gatehouse — alongside a museum of significant archaeological finds. Admission is free, with donations welcome. Open from late March to the end of September.

Best for: Free UNESCO World Heritage Site with full-scale Roman reconstructions — open late March to September.

The Word

The Word on Market Place is the National Centre for the Written Word and one of the most impressive free attractions in the North East. It is far more than a library — inside you will find interactive digital exhibits, a fabrication lab with 3D printers and laser cutters, a performance space, and a rooftop terrace with views across the town. The Storyworld experience, where children can immerse themselves in projections and sound effects, is particularly good for families. Completely free.

Best for: Much more than a library — interactive exhibits, a fabrication lab, and a rooftop terrace. Completely free.

The Beaches

South Shields has some of the finest beaches in the North East, and they cost nothing to enjoy. Sandhaven Beach is the main stretch — a wide, golden, Blue Flag beach that is perfect for sandcastles, paddling, and sunbathing. Littlehaven Beach, just to the north, is rockier and better for exploring rock pools. Both are free and easily accessible from the seafront promenade.

Further south, Marsden Beach sits beneath dramatic limestone cliffs and offers a wilder, more dramatic coastal experience. It is accessible from the clifftop car park or via The Leas coastal walk.

South Marine Park

South Marine Park on Sea Road is the green heart of the South Shields seafront. The park has a boating lake, the Lakeshore Railroad miniature steam railway, two play parks, gardens, and a bandstand. Walking through the park is free; pedalo and boat hire and the miniature railway are available at modest prices. It connects directly to the seafront, making it easy to combine with a beach visit.

South Shields Museum and Art Gallery

South Shields Museum and Art Gallery at 10 Ocean Road is free to visit and celebrates the rich heritage of South Tyneside. Permanent displays cover local history, maritime heritage, and the town's multicultural story — South Shields has one of the oldest Yemeni and Bangladeshi communities in Britain. Changing exhibitions keep things fresh. Open Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm and Saturday 11am to 4pm.

Best for: Free museum on Ocean Road — local history, maritime heritage, and the story of one of Britain's most multicultural towns.

Bents Park Sunday Concerts

Every summer, Bents Park on the seafront hosts the South Tyneside Sunday Concerts — one of the biggest free music festivals in the country. The concerts typically run over four Sundays in July and August, with well-known acts performing to crowds of thousands. Gates open around 12.45pm and no ticket is needed for general admission. The concerts form part of the wider This is South Tyneside Festival, which runs throughout the summer.

Best for: Free Sunday concerts at Bents Park every summer — one of the biggest free music festivals in the country.

The Leas Coastal Walk

The clifftop path from Bents Park south to Marsden Bay is one of the finest coastal walks in the North East — and it is completely free. The 3-mile route follows the dramatic limestone cliffs of The Leas, passing wildflower meadows and offering views along the Durham Heritage Coast. At the far end, you reach Marsden Rock and the famous Marsden Grotto cave pub. The National Trust's Souter Lighthouse sits along the route, with its grounds free to explore.

Ocean Beach Pleasure Park

Ocean Beach Pleasure Park on Sea Road has free admission — you only pay for the rides using contactless Fun Cards or wristbands. Even without spending anything, the park is worth a wander for the atmosphere, the arcades, and the seaside buzz. With over 40 rides and attractions, it is the North East's biggest free-admission fun park.
