New Operator to Run South Shields Market from July

Independent operator Local Heroes takes on the Saturday market in the Market Place as a pilot from 4 July, with a refreshed line-up of independents and existing traders kept at its heart.

South Shields Market is getting a shake-up. South Tyneside Council has appointed independent operator Local Heroes to run the Saturday market in the historic Market Place, starting with a pilot that runs from 4 July to the end of 2026.

What is changing

The pilot is a chance to test a different approach to how the market is run. Shoppers can expect a refreshed line-up of stalls showcasing local producers, independent traders, and a more varied retail and food offer. Local Heroes, who have delivered successful markets elsewhere in the region, will focus on increasing footfall, making better use of the available pitches, and improving support and communication with stallholders.

Best for: The pilot runs every Saturday from 4 July to the end of 2026 in the Market Place, in the heart of South Shields town centre.

Existing traders stay put

Importantly, current traders remain at the heart of the market. The council says existing stallholders will keep their place and will have the chance to help shape the offer as it develops, with new traders and experiences introduced alongside them to broaden the market's appeal.

The Market Place has hosted a market for centuries, sitting between St Hilda's Church and the riverside, and a busier, more diverse Saturday market would be a welcome boost for the town centre. If you have not been for a while, the relaunch from 4 July is a good reason to take another look.

The appointment was announced by South Tyneside Council.
