Living History Day: Roman Life at Arbeia
A hands-on living history day where visitors can try on Roman armour, helmets and equipment and meet costumed re-enactors. Free admission.
About This Event
Step back nearly two thousand years at Arbeia, the reconstructed Roman fort that once guarded the mouth of the Tyne. This drop-in living history day puts the everyday world of the Roman garrison within reach, with the chance to handle replica arms and armour and quiz the soldiers and civilians who bring the site to life. Arbeia is one of South Tyneside's most striking heritage attractions, with its rebuilt gatehouse, barracks and commanding officer's house sitting above the town. Admission is free, making it an easy summer-holiday outing for families exploring the fort's ramparts and hands-on displays.
