Best Beaches in South Shields
From the golden sands of Sandhaven to the dramatic cliffs and seabird colonies at Marsden Bay, here is your complete guide to the beaches of South Shields.
South Shields has some of the finest beaches in the North East. The coastline runs from the mouth of the River Tyne southwards through golden sands, limestone cliffs, and dramatic sea stacks. Whether you want a family day on the sand, a clifftop walk, or a quiet cove away from the crowds, there is a beach here for you.
Sandhaven Beach
Sandhaven is the main beach in South Shields and the one most visitors head for. It is a long, wide stretch of golden sand backed by a promenade lined with cafes, ice cream stands, and amusements. Lifeguards patrol during peak season, and the beach regularly meets high water quality standards.
Facilities are excellent. The promenade has public toilets, and you are within walking distance of Ocean Beach Pleasure Park, a skate park, crazy golf at Smugglers Cove, and the bowling alley. The Sand Dancer sits right on the beach if you want a drink with a sea view, and Minchella and Co is on the elevated walkway above for ice cream and coffee.
Parking: Around 2,500 pay-and-display spaces along Sea Road. Pay by cash or the PayByPhone app. Disabled parking is available close to the beach.
Dogs: Not permitted between 8am and 6pm from 1 May to 30 September. Outside those times and dates, dogs are welcome.
Swimming: Lifeguard-patrolled during summer. A safe, gently shelving beach suitable for families.
Best for: Sandhaven is South Shields' flagship beach — golden sand, lifeguards in summer, excellent facilities, and easy parking along Sea Road.
Littlehaven Beach
Littlehaven sits just north of Sandhaven, separated by a low rocky headland. It is smaller and quieter, with a more sheltered feel. The beach is popular with families who want the sand without the crowds, and with dog walkers year round.
The Little Haven Hotel overlooks the beach from River Drive, and South Shields Surf School runs lessons from the shore. The beach is accessible from the coastal path and has a small car park nearby.
Parking: Limited spaces on River Drive and the surrounding streets. The main Sea Road car parks for Sandhaven are a short walk away.
Dogs: Allowed all year round — no seasonal restrictions.
Swimming: The beach is more sheltered than Sandhaven, but there are no lifeguards. Take care with currents near the river mouth.
Best for: Quieter than Sandhaven with no seasonal dog ban. A favourite with dog walkers and families who prefer a calmer beach.
Marsden Beach and Marsden Rock
Marsden Beach is where the South Shields coastline becomes truly dramatic. The golden sand is backed by tall magnesian limestone cliffs, and the centrepiece is Marsden Rock — a 27-metre sea stack sitting around 90 metres offshore. The rock's famous arch collapsed in 1996 after a winter of storms, leaving two separate stacks.
The cliffs are an important breeding ground for seabirds. In spring and summer, you can see kittiwakes, herring gulls, fulmars, and cormorants nesting on the rock faces and on Marsden Rock itself. It is one of the best places to watch seabirds in the North East without boarding a boat.
At the base of the cliffs sits the Marsden Grotto, said to be the only cave pub in Europe. Carved into the cliff face by Jack "the Blaster" Bates in 1782, it has been a pub and restaurant for over two centuries. Access is by a lift from the clifftop or by steps down to the beach.
Parking: Pay-and-display car park at the clifftop, next to the lift and steps.
Dogs: Allowed all year round — no seasonal restrictions.
Swimming: No lifeguards. The beach can have strong currents and the water is cold. Experienced open-water swimmers use this spot, but it is not recommended for casual swimming.
Best for: Dramatic limestone cliffs, the 27-metre Marsden Rock sea stack, seabird colonies, and Europe's only cave pub at the Marsden Grotto.
The Leas and the Coastal Path
The Leas is the stretch of open cliff-top grassland running south from Bents Park towards Marsden and Souter Lighthouse. It is not a beach in itself, but it connects Sandhaven and Marsden with a beautiful coastal walk, and there are several small coves and rocky stretches accessible from the path.
The walk from Bents Park to Marsden Bay is approximately three miles and takes one and a half to two hours. The terrain is mostly grass and coastal paths with gentle undulations. See our best walks guide for full route details.
South Marine Park sits at the northern end of The Leas, with its boating lake, miniature railway, and playgrounds — a natural stopping point before or after a beach day.
Best for: The Leas connects Sandhaven to Marsden along open clifftops with sea views, wildflowers, and access to quiet coves.
