Whether you are choosing a school for your child or considering a move to the area, here is what you need to know.

Further Education

South Tyneside College

South Tyneside College on St Georges Avenue is the main further education college serving the area. It caters for nearly 3,000 full-time and over 5,000 part-time students across hundreds of courses, from A-levels and BTECs to apprenticeships and degree-level qualifications.

The college is also home to specialist marine and merchant navy training — one of only a handful of institutions in the country offering navigation, marine engineering, and electro-technical officer courses.

Best for: Nearly 3,000 full-time students and specialist marine training — one of the most comprehensive FE colleges in the North East.

Choosing a School: What to Consider

Ofsted ratings are a useful starting point, but they are not the whole picture. Catchment areas in South Shields can be tight, particularly for the most popular schools, so check the admissions criteria before setting your heart on a particular school. Visit during an open day if you can — the feel of a school matters as much as the data.

For secondary schools, look at Progress 8 and Attainment 8 scores alongside the Ofsted rating. Both Harton Academy and St Wilfrid's have published results that compare well with schools across the region.
