Churches in South Shields
A guide to the main churches and places of worship in South Shields, from the ancient parish church of St Hilda's to the Al-Azhar Mosque -- one of the first purpose-built mosques in Britain.
South Shields has a rich and diverse history of faith. The town's churches reflect centuries of Christian worship, from an ancient parish church on the Lawe Top to Victorian and Edwardian buildings across the borough. The Yemeni community, established in the early twentieth century, gave South Shields one of the first purpose-built mosques in Britain. Together, these places of worship tell the story of a town shaped by migration, industry, and community.
St Hilda's Church
St Hilda's Church stands on the Lawe Top overlooking the Market Place, the river, and the sea. It is the ancient parish church of South Shields and one of the most historically significant buildings in the town.
The present building is largely Victorian, rebuilt in 1810 and restored in the 1880s, but a church has stood on this site since at least the medieval period. The churchyard contains some of the oldest gravestones in South Tyneside, and the elevated position offers fine views across the town centre to the coast.
Services: Sunday Mass at 9.30am. Evensong (BCP) on the third Sunday of the month at 6pm. Weekday Mass at 10am on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Evening Prayer on Wednesdays at 5.30pm.
Address: Market Place, South Shields, NE33 1DX
St Hilda's is part of the Church of England, within the Diocese of Durham. The church is Grade II listed and is open for visitors outside service times by arrangement.
St Aidan's Church
St Aidan's Church sits on St Aidan's Road on the Lawe Top, close to Arbeia Roman Fort. Built in 1888, it is a handsome late-Victorian church designed in the Early English Gothic style with a distinctive tower.
The church serves the Lawe Top and Baring Street area and is part of the Church of England. It is listed by Historic England as a building of architectural and historic interest.
Address: St Aidan's Road, South Shields, NE33 2EU
Holy Trinity Church
Holy Trinity Church on Laygate is one of the older churches in the town, with a history stretching back to the early nineteenth century. The church stands near the site of the Al-Azhar Mosque, a physical reminder of the long relationship between South Shields' faith communities.
Address: Laygate, South Shields
St Stephen's Church
St Stephen's Church in the Westoe area was designed by the architect John Dobson (who also designed Newcastle Central Station) and built in the 1850s. It is a fine example of Victorian church architecture and serves the Westoe community.
Address: St Stephen's Road, Westoe, South Shields
Al-Azhar Mosque
The Al-Azhar Mosque on Laygate holds a unique place in British history. Built in 1971, it was one of the first purpose-built mosques in the United Kingdom, constructed to serve South Shields' established Yemeni community.
The Yemeni Community in South Shields
Yemeni sailors began settling in South Shields in the early 1900s, drawn by work on the ships and in the boarding houses around the docks. By the 1930s, a distinct Arab quarter had formed around Laygate and the Mill Dam area. South Shields was one of the few ports in the North East with Arab boarding houses, and seamen from other ports would come here seeking work.
Sheikh Abdullah Ali Al-Hakimi established the first mosque on Cuthbert Street in the 1930s, converting the former Hilda Arms pub. When the council later needed the land, an alternative site was offered next to Holy Trinity Church -- and this became the location of the Al-Azhar Mosque as it stands today.
Visiting the Mosque
The Al-Azhar Mosque welcomes visits from schools, community groups, and individuals interested in learning about Islam and the Yemeni heritage of South Shields. The mosque also participates in interfaith events across the region. Contact the mosque in advance to arrange a visit.
Address: Laygate, South Shields, NE33 5RT
