About St Hilda's Church

St Hilda's is the ancient parish church of South Shields, a Grade II listed building standing on the Lawe Top overlooking the Market Place and the River Tyne. It is said to occupy the site of a chapel founded in the seventh century and linked to Hilda of Whitby. The present church was largely rebuilt through the nineteenth century while retaining its older tower, with galleries carried on cast-iron columns. Among its notable features is a model lifeboat by William Wouldhave dating from 1802, suspended from the ceiling, and an organ built by Thomas Christopher Lewis in 1866. It is part of the Church of England within the Diocese of Durham.
