Christmas in South Shields 2026

The Customs House panto, carols at The Word, candlelit tours at Arbeia, the Boxing Day dip and festive walks along the seafront. A guide to Christmas in South Shields, with confirmed 2026 dates.

SouthShields.org·

Christmas in South Shields is a mix of old habits and seaside oddities. There is a pantomime that has been part of the town's December for decades, carols in the Market Place, and a beach where people queue up to run into the North Sea on Boxing Day. This guide covers what happens every year and what is confirmed for 2026 so far.

The lights switch-on (2026 date TBC)

The countdown to Christmas usually starts with South Tyneside Council's lights switch-on in the Market Place, on a Thursday evening in late November. In 2023 it ran on Thursday 23 November, 5pm to 6pm, alongside separate switch-ons in Jarrow and Hebburn, according to the council's own announcement. In 2025 it was held on Thursday 20 November.

For 2026 the date is TBC. Local press has mentioned a Thursday 19 November switch-on, but the council had not published its 2026 programme when we checked on 2 November. Watch the council's events channels, and we will add the confirmed time to our events calendar.

Christmas markets

South Shields has no month-long Christmas market, but there are a few good options. Hedworth Hall hosts a free Twilight Christmas Market on the evening of Thursday 10 December. South Shields Market trades every Saturday in December from 9am to 3pm. And North Shields Christmas Market, on 5 and 6 December, is a seven-minute ferry ride away. Our guide to Christmas markets in South Shields has the full detail.

Pantomime and festive shows

The Customs House on Mill Dam is the centre of the town's Christmas entertainment. This year's pantomime is Sleeping Beauty, running from Friday 20 November 2026 to Saturday 2 January 2027, with Ray Spencer as the Dame. A Young at Heart performance is on 11 December.

For younger children, Christmas with the Crackers runs from 28 November to Christmas Eve. There is also a screening of André Rieu's Christmas concert on 5 and 6 December. On New Year's Eve, Jason Cook's NYE Comedy Club is an alternative to a night out on Ocean Road.

Best for: a family night out. Panto weekends sell out, so book early.

Carols and festive events at The Word

The Word in the Market Place runs a free festive programme through December. Highlights include:

For a traditional service, St Hilda's Church, the town's ancient parish church on the edge of the Market Place, is the obvious place to start. Its 2026 Christmas service times had not been published when we checked, so contact the parish directly.

Santa and family days out

South Shields Museum and Art Gallery on Ocean Road has hosted Santa at Jingle Bell Square on December Saturdays in recent years, with bookable sessions. The 2026 dates had not been announced when we checked, so keep an eye on the North East Museums website.

At Arbeia Roman Fort, candlelit tours run after dark on Saturday 12 December. You get a look inside the Commanding Officer's House by candlelight, with festive refreshments. It makes an unusual alternative to a grotto for older children.

Festive walks: the seafront and Marsden

When the house gets too warm, the coast is the obvious escape. The promenade from the Groyne past Littlehaven and Sandhaven beaches to the Leas is flat and busy with families walking off Christmas dinner.

For something longer, carry on south along the Leas to Marsden Bay and Souter Lighthouse. It is a bracing clifftop walk in midwinter, so check the National Trust's winter opening before planning a stop there. Marsden Grotto, the cave bar under the cliffs, makes a memorable place to warm up, but check its festive opening first. Our guides to Marsden Bay and the best walks in South Shields have routes.

The Boxing Day dip

Littlehaven Beach has hosted a Boxing Day dip for many years, most notably the charity dip in aid of Cancer Connections, which has drawn hundreds of swimmers and spectators. Details for 2026 had not been published when we checked. If you plan to take part, register with the organising charity rather than just turning up, and follow any safety briefing.

Football fans have another Boxing Day option: Hebburn Town v South Shields, a 3pm National League North derby.

Work Christmas parties

If you are the one organising the work do, our guide to corporate Christmas party venues in South Shields rounds up the local places that take festive bookings for teams and groups, with what each offers and how to book.

Christmas trees

The nearest places to buy a real tree are the tree yard at Wheathall Farm in Whitburn and Scott's House Farm at West Boldon, and the council opens drop-off points in parks for recycling trees in January. Our guide to Christmas trees in South Shields covers where to buy, how to keep a tree fresh and how to get rid of it afterwards.

Shopping, parking and getting around

The council has offered free festive parking in town centre car parks in some past Decembers, but no scheme had been announced for 2026 when we checked. Look at the council's parking pages before you drive in. Late-night shopping hours for the Denmark Centre and King Street had not been published either.

The Metro is the easy alternative. South Shields station is a short walk from King Street, the Market Place and The Customs House, and trains run direct to Newcastle, with a change at Pelaw for Sunderland. Metro and Shields Ferry services change over Christmas and New Year, with reduced or no services on some days, so check Nexus for the festive timetable before you travel.
