A Weekend in South Shields

A two-day itinerary for visitors to South Shields, from the beaches and seafront to Arbeia Roman Fort, Ocean Road, and the Marsden coastal walk.

SouthShields.org·

South Shields is one of the most rewarding day trips in the North East, but it deserves more than a few hours. A full weekend gives you time to explore the beaches, the history, the food, and the coastline properly. Here is a two-day itinerary that covers the best of the town.

Day One: Beaches, Seafront, and Ocean Road

Morning

Start at Sandhaven Beach. If the weather is on your side, walk the full length of the sand from Littlehaven in the north to the rocks at the southern end. Pick up a coffee and ice cream from Minchella and Co on the elevated walkway — they have been serving the seafront since 1942.

After the beach, walk through South Marine Park, the green heart of the seafront. The boating lake has pedalo and rowing boat hire, and the Lakeshore Railroad miniature steam railway runs on weekends. Children will want to stay here for a while.

Lunch

For lunch, there is really only one first-timer's choice: Colmans Fish and Chips at 176-186 Ocean Road. Five generations of the same family have been frying here since 1926. Get a takeaway and eat on the seafront benches, or sit in the restaurant.

If you prefer something more upmarket, Colmans Seafood Temple on Sea Road occupies a beautifully restored 1931 shelter building with panoramic windows and an oyster and cocktail bar.

Afternoon

After lunch, walk down Ocean Road towards the town centre. This is South Shields' most famous street — known locally as the curry mile for its remarkable concentration of Indian and Bangladeshi restaurants. Browse the independent shops and stop at Sea Change Cafe for a mid-afternoon coffee if you need one.

If the tide and weather allow, head back to the seafront for a late-afternoon swim at Sandhaven (lifeguards patrol in summer) or simply sit on the sand with a book.

Evening

Ocean Road comes alive in the evening. For curry, you are spoilt for choice — Cafe India, Spice Garden, and Zeera Indian Cuisine are all excellent. See our best restaurants guide for the full rundown. After dinner, The Sand Dancer on Sea Road has live music at weekends and a beer garden overlooking the sea.

Best for: Day one summary: Sandhaven Beach, South Marine Park, Colmans for lunch, Ocean Road, and a curry for dinner.

Day Two: History, Culture, and the Coastal Walk

Morning

Begin at Arbeia Roman Fort on Baring Street. This is the garrison that guarded the main sea supply route to Hadrian's Wall, and it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Admission is free. The full-scale reconstructions of a Roman gatehouse, barracks, and commanding officer's house are genuinely impressive, and the museum of archaeological finds is excellent.

From Arbeia, walk ten minutes to The Word on Market Place — the National Centre for the Written Word. It is a striking modern library with interactive digital exhibits, a fabrication lab, and a rooftop terrace with views across the town. Also free.

Lunch

Caffe Di Bella on Prince Edward Road is a short walk from the town centre and serves some of the best coffee and brunch food in South Shields. Their Italian and Sardinian coffee is excellent, and the sandwiches and salads are made fresh.

Afternoon

After lunch, drive or catch the bus to the clifftop at Marsden Bay. Walk south along The Leas — the open grassland above the cliffs — towards Souter Lighthouse. The walk is about three miles and takes roughly ninety minutes. You will pass Marsden Rock, see the seabird colonies on the cliffs, and enjoy some of the finest coastal scenery in the North East.

If you have time, visit the lighthouse itself. Opened in 1871, it was the first in the world built specifically for electric illumination. The National Trust runs a visitor exhibition and tea room.

On the way back, stop at the Marsden Grotto — Europe's only cave pub, carved into the cliff face in 1782. A pint here is an experience you will not forget.

Evening

For your final evening, head to Mill Dam and visit The Customs House, South Tyneside's premier arts venue. Check what is on — the 440-seat theatre hosts comedy, music, and drama throughout the year, and there is a cinema and art gallery as well.

Finish with a pint at The Steamboat at 27 Mill Dam, a multi-award-winning real ale pub with seven ever-changing cask ales. It is the perfect way to close out a weekend in South Shields.

Best for: Day two summary: Arbeia Roman Fort, The Word, a clifftop walk to Souter Lighthouse, the Marsden Grotto, and a pint at The Steamboat.

Getting Here

South Shields is the terminus of the Tyne and Wear Metro's South Shields line. Trains from Newcastle take around 28 minutes. If you are driving, the A19 and A194(M) connect to the town from the south and west. See our parking guide for car park details.

Where to Stay

The Little Haven Hotel on River Drive has views over the Tyne and Littlehaven Beach. For budget options, there are several guest houses near the seafront. Booking ahead is recommended in summer and during the Great North Run weekend.
